What is HPC-X

HPC-X is NVIDIA’s comprehensive software toolkit designed to maximise the performance and scalability of high-performance computing (HPC) applications, particularly those using Message Passing Interface (MPI) for parallel computing.

Key Components

HPC-X bundles together several important HPC communication libraries and tools:

MPI Implementation: At its core, HPC-X includes Open MPI, enhanced with NVIDIA’s optimizations for their hardware ecosystem. This provides the fundamental message-passing framework that most HPC applications rely on.

UCX (Unified Communication X): This is a communication framework that provides optimised, hardware-aware communication primitives. UCX automatically selects the best available transport method (InfiniBand, Ethernet, shared memory, etc.) and includes support for GPUDirect technologies, enabling direct GPU-to-GPU communication without CPU involvement.

Additional Libraries: HPC-X incorporates HCOLL (hierarchical collectives for improved collective operation performance), SHARP (Scalable Hierarchical Aggregation and Reduction Protocol for offloading collective operations to the network), and NCCL (NVIDIA Collective Communication Library for multi-GPU communication).

Performance Optimizations

The toolkit is specifically optimised for NVIDIA’s hardware stack, including their GPUs, DPUs (Data Processing Units), and InfiniBand networking equipment from their Mellanox acquisition. It provides automatic tuning capabilities that adapt to different system configurations and workload characteristics.

Key optimizations include support for various GPUDirect technologies (RDMA, Storage, Async), which allow direct data movement between GPUs, network adapters, and storage without CPU intervention. This significantly reduces latency and improves bandwidth utilisation.
