Thickness: 25mm (1.0")
Mounted flush with the front edge of the frame.
The extra depth hides the gap between the 110mm
divider and 120mm side panels, and creates a
channel behind the shelf for cable routing.
Step-by-Step Build Instructions
Phase 1: Preparation
Step 1: Purchase Materials
Visit a Japanese hardware store (Kohnan, DCM, or your local home centre). Ask the staff to cut wood to size:
- 「このサイズに切ってください」 (Kono saizu ni kitte kudasai) – “Please cut this to these sizes.”
- 「これをサイズに合わせて切ってもらえますか?」 (Kore o saizu ni awasete kitte moraemasu ka?) – “Can you cut this to size?”
Step 2: Sand All Wood Pieces
After cutting, sand every piece before assembly.
120 Grit – First Pass (removes saw marks)
- Sand all cut edges and surfaces.
- Always sand with the wood grain, never across it.
- Use moderate, even pressure with long, smooth strokes.
- After the first pass, lightly mist the surface with water. This raises the wood grain.
- Allow 10-15 minutes to dry.
120 Grit – Second Pass (after grain raising)
- Sand again with 120 grit to remove the raised grain fibres.
- The surface should now feel noticeably smoother.
240 Grit – Final Pass (polishing)
- Sand lightly with 240 grit using gentle pressure.
- This creates a silky-smooth, splinter-free surface.
- Run your fingers over the surface to check for any rough spots.
Clean Up
- Wipe all surfaces with a damp cloth to remove dust.
- Allow to dry before assembly.
Step 3: Apply Wood Finish (Optional)
Apply oil or varnish (ニス – Nisu) to all surfaces before assembly. Follow the product instructions for drying time.
Phase 2: Cutting Holes
Step 4: Cut the Cable Entry Hole (Right Side Panel)
This hole allows HDMI, USB-C power, and Ethernet cables to enter the shelf from behind.
- Mark: On the right side panel, measure 20mm up from the bottom edge and 20mm in from the front edge.
- Draw: Mark a 100mm x 50mm (3.9” x 2.0”) rectangle.
- Drill: Using a 10mm drill bit, drill a hole at each of the 4 corners of the rectangle (drill just inside the lines).
- Saw: Insert your hand saw blade into one of the drilled holes and carefully cut along the marked lines to the next corner. Repeat for all 4 sides.
- Sand: Smooth the edges with sandpaper to prevent cable damage.
Step 5: Drill USB Cable Holes (Middle Shelf)
These holes allow USB-C charging cables to rise from below the middle shelf to the controllers sitting on top.
- Mark 3 hole positions on the middle shelf:
- Hole 1: 100mm (3.9”) from left edge
- Hole 2: 200mm (7.9”) from left edge (centre)
- Hole 3: 300mm (11.8”) from left edge
- Centre each hole at 60mm (2.4”) from the front edge.
- Drill: Use a 10mm drill bit. Drill straight through the 20mm wood.
- Sand: Smooth hole edges to prevent cable damage.
Step 6: Drill USB Cable Holes (Internal Divider)
These holes allow cables to pass through the divider between sections.
- Mark 3 hole positions on the divider:
- Hole 1: 105mm (4.1”) from the bottom edge
- Hole 2: 210mm (8.3”) from the bottom edge
- Hole 3: 315mm (12.4”) from the bottom edge
- Centre each hole at 60mm (2.4”) from the front edge.
- Drill: Use a 10mm drill bit. Drill straight through.
- Sand: Smooth hole edges.
Step 7: Cut the Dock Slot (Bottom Base) – Optional
If you want the dock to slide into a recessed slot rather than simply sitting on the base:
- Mark: On the bottom base, centred in the right-hand section, draw a 125mm x 215mm (4.9” x 8.5”) rectangle.
- Drill: 10mm holes at all 4 corners.
- Saw: Cut between the holes with your hand saw.
- Sand: Smooth until the dock slides in and out easily.
Phase 3: Assembly
Step 8: Drill Pilot Holes
For every screw joint, always pre-drill pilot holes to prevent the wood from splitting.
| Screw Type | Pilot Hole Diameter | Pilot Hole Depth |
|---|---|---|
| 35-40mm assembly screws | 3mm (1/8”) | 25-35mm (1.0”-1.4”) |
| 20mm back panel screws | 2mm (5/64”) | 15mm (0.6”) |
| 5.1mm x 56mm wall screws | 4.5mm (11/64”) | 45-50mm (1.8”-2.0”) |
Technique: Wrap a piece of tape around the drill bit at the desired depth to act as a depth marker. Drill at medium speed, keeping the drill perpendicular to the wood surface.
Step 9: Assemble the Box Frame
- Attach side panels to the bottom base: Place the bottom base flat. Position the two side panels vertically on either end, flush at the front. Pre-drill 3-4 pilot holes per joint. Drive 35-40mm wood screws.
- Install the internal divider: Position it at the 200mm (7.9”) mark from the left edge – the exact centre. Pre-drill and screw through the bottom base into the divider (2-3 screws).
- Add the middle shelf: Position it at the desired height (roughly 200mm from the bottom base). Pre-drill and screw through the side panels and the divider into the middle shelf.
- Attach the top shelf: Place on top of the side panels. Pre-drill and screw through the top shelf into the side panels and the divider.
Step 10: Install the Back Panel
- Position: Place the 25mm thick back panel against the rear of the frame, flush with the front edge.
- Secure: Use 20mm screws every 100-150mm (4-6”) along the edges. Pre-drill with 2mm pilot holes.
- Check: Ensure cables can route behind the panel through the space created by the 25mm thickness.
Phase 4: Wall Mounting
Step 11: Locate Wall Studs
Use a stud finder (壁内探知機 – Kabe-nai Tanchiki) to find wooden beams behind the wall. If you have concrete walls, you will need masonry drill bits and expansion bolts.
Step 12: Mark and Level
- Hold the shelf against the wall under your TV.
- Use a level (水準器 – Suijunki) to ensure it is perfectly horizontal.
- Mark the screw hole positions with a pencil.
Step 13: Drill and Mount
- For wood studs: Drill 4.5mm pilot holes, 45-50mm deep.
- For concrete: Use a masonry bit (コンクリート用ドリル) to drill 60-65mm deep, then insert expansion bolts.
- Insert right-angle anchors into the wall.
- Screw the shelf to the wall using your 5.1mm x 56mm wall screws. Use a minimum of 2 mounting points (top and bottom). 4 points is recommended for maximum stability.
- Check level one final time after tightening.
Phase 5: Cable Management
Step 14: Route All Cables
- HDMI cable: From the TV, down behind the wall, through the cable entry hole in the right side panel, to the dock’s HDMI port.
- USB-C power cable: From the wall charger, through the cable entry hole, to the dock’s AC adapter port.
- Ethernet cable: Through the cable entry hole to the dock’s LAN port.
- Controller USB-C cables: From the USB-C hub (placed on the bottom shelf), up through the 10mm holes in the middle shelf, to the controllers sitting on top.
Step 15: Secure Cables
Use adhesive cable clips (ケーブルクリップ) on the back of the shelf and along the back panel to keep cables tidy and prevent them from dangling.
Power Requirements
| Device | Power Draw | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Switch 2 Dock | 60W (20V/3A) | Requires USB-C PD (Power Delivery) |
| 2x Pro Controllers | ~10W total (5V/1A each) | Charges via USB-C |
| Total | ~70W | 65W+ charger recommended; 100W for headroom |
Look for a charger with the PSE certification mark (PSE認証) when buying in Japan.
Safety Notes
- Wall anchors must support a minimum of 10kg (shelf + all devices weigh approximately 2kg; the 10kg rating provides a 5x safety margin).
- Ventilation: Ensure at least 10mm of gap around the dock on all sides for heat dissipation. Do not enclose the dock in a tight space without airflow.
- Cable strain: Leave slack at all connection points to prevent damage to USB-C ports.
- TV clearance: Ensure the shelf does not block the TV screen, IR sensor, or any ventilation openings on the TV.
- Electrical safety: Use a PSE-certified USB-C PD charger (「PSE認証」– PSE Ninshou).
